The Consolidation That Matters

OpenAI’s announcement was crowded with product changes: GPT-5.6 in three tiers (Sol, Terra, Luna), a unified plugins directory, Scheduled Tasks, a built-in browser, the sunset of Atlas, the debut of Sites in beta, and the absorption of the standalone Codex app into the ChatGPT desktop client.

But the structural change is simpler than the laundry list suggests. OpenAI is consolidating every product surface — chat, coding, agents, browsing, plugins — into a single application where the organizing principle is not the conversation but the goal.

ChatGPT Work is described by OpenAI as “an agent in ChatGPT that helps you take on more ambitious tasks.” It can “gather information across your apps and workflows to create finished materials like sheets, slides, docs, and web apps, and stay with complex projects for hours by breaking them into smaller steps.”

More than 5 million people use Codex every week, and according to OpenAI, more than 1 million now use it for non-coding tasks — a metric that directly motivated the Work rebrand. Codex was always an agent; OpenAI is now admitting that and building a product around it rather than pretending it’s a developer tool.
